In the first six installments of the Future Perfect series, thirteen-year-old Logan Doss traveled to Israel with his mother, Lois Doss, an accomplished archaeologist, to study newly discovered evidence of ancient life. These findings were inside a cave on an island that had recently resurfaced during an earthquake in the Mediterranean Sea. Because of strange magnetic readings coming from a large rock formation inside the cave, world-renowned physicist Dr. Rudy Geiger was also called in to investigate. As Lois was showing Dr. Geiger and his assistant around the cave, another earthquake struck, and the rock formation Dr. Geiger was sent to investigate began to pulse with radiant light. Before the earthquake subsided, Dr. Geiger and Logan were thrown into the glow of the stone structure and vanished. Dr. Geiger’s assistant sent a robotic probe into the strange phenomenon, and it disappeared as well.
Dazed, Logan found himself transported thousands of years into the past, where he encountered a mysterious prophet named Enoch. Together with Enoch’s grandson Lamech, Logan was able to escape capture by Tubal-Cain, a leader of the intelligent, ruthless Cainite clan. Logan found many amazing differences between the Earth he knew and the one into which he had emerged. Both the Earth’s atmosphere and humanity were different. Instead of rain, water rising from the ground, called the mists, bathed the land with moisture. The planet appeared to be much better protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Perhaps because of these and other differences, humans aged much more slowly, so that people who looked thirty years old by modern standards might be more than two hundred years old in the ancient world. Humans also had greater access to more of their brain capacity than is common in the modern world. Some even possessed unique abilities called Gifts. A Gift might be the ability to project one’s thoughts or even to read minds. Some people, such as Lamech, could fight with profound speed and accuracy.
For the first few weeks after being transported, Logan lived peacefully in Enoch’s city of Parvaim, learning the customs and history of the Ancient world, including how the sons of Adam had begun to spread out and inhabit the world. Logan’s time in Parvaim was cut short when agents of Tubal-Cain kidnapped him and took him to an outpost just outside the Tortured Mists, an unstable area where the natural mists of the world turned violent and dangerous. Having been warned in a vision, Enoch sent Lamech to follow and rescue young Logan from his captors. During his rescue attempt, Lamech burned down the outpost but got lost with Logan inside the Tortured Mists. Through a series of miraculous events, Lamech and Logan found their way into a land hidden deep within the Tortured Mists. In this land, called Pellios, the two travelers found the remnants of the Line of Zirci, who, forced into the Tortured Mists by the line of Cain, had been left for dead. By God’s grace, they had survived and even flourished in their new home. However, the Zirci’s days were numbered. With only one exception, no children had been born to the Zirci for more than two centuries. That one exception was a young woman named Bete, who befriended Logan and Lamech.
After several months of recuperation, Lamech returned to his people while Logan remained among the Zirci. For thirty years, Logan learned from them the skills and knowledge he would need to survive in the Outside World of Men. These decades were important not only to Logan but also to other forces in the Ancient world who had designs on the future.
At the conclusion of this time, Enoch sent Lamech to retrieve Logan to attend a Firstborn Council scheduled to take place in the port city of Adoraim. During their journey, the two travelers encountered a precocious young man named Hemeth, who had found himself caught in one of Tubal-Cain’s grand schemes. After helping him escape, Logan and Lamech had to flee with him from pursuing Cainite warriors and were saved only by the last-minute intervention of Enoch. Once inside Adoraim, Logan, Lamech, and Hemeth found themselves in the middle of an inter-line conflict and had to defend themselves in the Council of the Firstborns. While the members of the Firstborn Council were occupied with their deliberations, Tubal-Cain took matters into his own hands and brutally assaulted Lamech using his powerful Gift of the Mind. While Lamech was trapped within Tubal-Cain’s mental grasp, Hemeth stumbled into this mental connection and found that although he was a Lowborn, his mind was every bit a match for Tubal-Cain’s. In rescuing Lamech, Hemeth created and trapped Tubal-Cain in a mental labyrinth and left the Cainite to find his own way out. Disgraced and humiliated, Tubal-Cain was stripped of his title of “Firstborn,” and his half-brother Jubal took his place.
After the assault on Lamech, the Firstborn Council, unsure how to proceed without war erupting, sent the three young men to the island of Atalànt, where they were to seek an audience with Adam, the Created One. Despite last-minute resistance from Cainite factions and their allies, the three weary travelers succeeded in boarding the ship Tomorrow’s Destiny, commanded by its young captain, Lubin, and set sail for the mysterious island of Atalànt.
On Atalànt, Logan freed Adam from the dark forces that bound him. Through the power of the Spirit of God, Logan banished the dark forces to the arid places of the Earth. While on Atalànt, Hemeth was adopted by an Elder Born kinsman named Gallios, who raised him like a son and nurtured his powerful Gift of the Mind.
Meanwhile, Tubal-Cain was met by a mysterious woman who counseled him to return to the Sacred Cave to receive something that would come to him there. When he arrived, Dr. Rudy Geiger came through the door from the future. Seizing his opportunity, Tubal-Cain took Dr. Geiger and acclimated him to the Ancient world. In the process, Dr. Geiger accidently used his probe to create a rift, opening a way for celestial beings known as the Watchers to fully enter the human world. Believing he could make his progeny the most powerful beings on Earth, Tubal-Cain endeavored to mix the bloodlines of men and Watchers. To test his theory, Tubal-Cain allowed the Watcher Samyaza to forcibly impregnate Hemeth’s sister, Sara of the Ono. Not wanting the Nephil creature to be born, Sara threw herself into the sea during the voyage from Atalànt to Adoraim.
Logan rescued Sara from drowning, and she bore the child in a small lagoon east of Adoraim City. Tasked by Sara to throw the just-born Nephil from the cliff above them, Logan ran to obey. Before he completed this mission, however, Logan encountered a small boy who persuaded him to leave the child on the cliffside rather than do as Sara had instructed. Before he could return to save Sara from the rising tide, Logan blacked out from exhaustion. When Logan finally returned to look for Sara, she had disappeared, presumably having drowned, her body being pulled out to sea with the tide.
Meanwhile, Tubal-Cain hatched a plan to use Dr. Geiger’s probe for his own ends. This probe, though harmless to people in the future, had detrimental effects on Ancient humans. Tubal-Cain attempted to use this new weapon to subdue his half-brother Jubal and reclaim his title as Firstborn. Before Tubal-Cain could fully succeed, Enoch arrived and foiled his plans.
As part of these events, Dr. Geiger double-crossed Tubal-Cain and turned the metal probe on him, causing the Highborn Cainite to lose consciousness. Dr. Geiger then attempted to open the door in the Sacred Cave back to his home; however, Logan, Enoch, Lamech, and Bete prevented him from entering. Shortly thereafter, the strange boy who had met Logan on the cliffside east of Adoraim City appeared and tried to force Logan to enter the door. To prevent that from happening, Enoch pushed Logan out of the way and disappeared through the door instead.
When Enoch emerged on the other side, he had arrived the moment after Logan and Dr. Geiger had left. However, he encountered only the empty husk of a dead Earth, with only one being still in existence—the boy Logan had met, an evil entity called the Bright Dark One. Learning from the boy that Logan had been killed on the two hundredth anniversary of his disappearance into the Ancient world, Enoch reentered the door in the cave. Unfortunately, these actions caused a complete temporal shift, in which Logan was killed by the Nephil Hepheaus not only in the past but also in the present. This paradox resulted in the collapse of all time and space.
Guided by the Head of Days through a mysterious time stream, Enoch slowly reset the timeline with the help of Sara of the Ono, whom he met and mentored at strategic moments throughout her early life. Realizing that Sara’s life was in danger, Enoch had to risk everything to find a way to rescue her.
Once Enoch reset the timeline, he returned to the modern world, but he arrived one month before Logan’s initial departure. The prophets Eliyahu and Joshua Doss met and protected Enoch upon his arrival on the newly surfaced island. Aleksandar Katzan and his cousin Dobroslav joined Joshua and Eliyahu on their trip to the island. The two young men had assisted the two prophets ever since Joshua’s plane had crashed in the Bulgarian mountains several years earlier. The two young men found that following the Head of Days was more dangerous than either of them thought. While in hiding on a Greek island, they learn of the destruction of their hometown and know that Hepheaus was behind it.
Unbeknownst to Logan and Lamech, Enoch sent Methuselah to rescue Sara from certain death. Meanwhile, the Nephilim child she bore disappeared. After losing Enoch, Logan falls into despair and nearly succumbs to an evil temptress, Sula of the Zior. However, he refused to give in to the temptation. Logan is spared Sula’s wrath by Sara of the Ono’s timely intervention. The two women square off, and Sula is momentarily defeated. Logan learns that Sara is still alive, but a root of bitterness still grows in his heart.
As time passed, the Watchers became increasingly unhinged, a side effect of living in the world beyond their normal realm. The Watcher Azazel rescues Tubal-Cain from the torment induced by the blast he received from Rudy Geiger’s probe. The Watcher’s intention is for Tubal-Cain to serve him. Instead, Tubal-Cain and Sula work together with Geber and Sara to stop the evil Watchers from taking over the world. Unfortunately, during this alliance, Tubal-Cain and Sula create a pact as dangerous as the watchers. Together, they find and watch over Sara’s spawn, Hepheaus, the Nephil. After a difficult childhood, Hepheaus learns the truth about his origins and meets the Bright Dark One, again disguised as a young boy. He instructs Hepheaus to go with Sula, who has him trained to be a warrior.
Unrecognized by the world and by other Nephilim, Hepheaus grows up to become an accomplished Adoraim warrior. Sula sends him to befriend Logan and earn his trust, but he cannot seem to fully gain Logan’s confidence, as Logan has an innate dislike of the covert Nephil. Meanwhile, Logan meets a Rohgah man named Seris, whom he first encountered at the Artisan Camp many years ago on his first trip to Adoraim with Lamech. Falling in love with Seris’s daughter, Lehasib, Logan chooses to leave the Destiny’s Tomorrow and return to Pellios with his new wife. Lamech meets Logan in Zior and shares his news: he has married Bete, and they are expecting a child. While in the port of Zior, Seris is poisoned, causing Logan and Lehasib to flee to Pellios, accompanied by Lamech.
Hepheaus pursues the group and is defeated by Lamech, who believes he has killed the man. However, Hepheaus survives and plots his revenge. When Lamech leaves Peillios with his wife and newborn son, Noah, Hepheaus attacks and kills Bete. Rescuing Noah, Lamech returns to Pellios with his son, but is unable to find Hepheaus, who fled. Lamech blames Logan for his dishonesty and for failing to kill Hepheaus as an infant when Sara ordered him to. Leaving Noah in the care of the Zirci, Lamech abandons Pellios for decades and vows revenge against his wife’s killer.
Meanwhile, Sula sends Hepheaus to Tubal-Cain for training in his unique mental abilities, thus fulfilling her end of the bargain she made with the Highborn Cainite after the defeat of the Watchers. Hepheaus endures decades of strict training under Tubal-Cain, while simultaneously being studied by Tubal-Cain for his own ends. Near the end of his training, Tubal-Cain sends Hepheaus on two important missions.
The first mission is to kill Rudy Geiger, who nearly killed Tubal-Cain using the probe that brought both he and Logan into the past. In the years since his betrayal, Geiger had been living in Cainite lands and protected from Tubal-Cain’s wrath. Along the way to complete his mission, Hepheaus encounters his mother, Sara of the Ono. During their interaction, Sara allows the Nephil to touch her, which provides Hepheaus the opportunity to learn about where his father and the other Watchers were imprisoned.
Meanwhile, Sula of the Zior, who wanted Geiger for her own purposes, made a deal with Heran to send her brother Hermez to intervene. He met Hepheaus in the Cainite lands and persuaded him not to kill Geiger, but instead made it look as though he had by murdering someone else. Hermez then delivered Geiger to Sula of the Zior. After these events, Hepheaus went to the desert location where his father and the other Watchers were held captive and learned from them how Tubal-Cain, Sula, Geber, and Sara had defeated them and put them in this strange prison. He also learned from his father how to fool Tubal-Cain’s powerful Gift of the Mind into believing that Geiger was really dead. Returning to his master after his supposedly successful mission to kill Geiger, Hepheaus was sent with the equipment needed to enter Pellios to exact revenge on Logan and kill the rest of the Zirci once and for all.
Warned in a dream of this impending danger to Logan, Sara of the Ono sends her brother, Hemeth, to find Lamech. Together, they are to stop Hepheaus from carrying out the plan. After some difficulty, Lamech and his second son, Seni, race off to Pellios with Hemeth and arrive in time to save both Logan and Noah. During the battle, Logan uses the probe to inflict what appears to be a fatal wound on Hepheaus, who runs off into the forest near Pellios. In his desperation, Hepheaus encounters the Bright Dark One and begs for his help. After some discussion, the Bright Dark One places Hepheaus into a deep and healing hibernation and hides him in the bowels of the Earth. Despite their best efforts, neither Logan nor any of the others can find where Hepheaus went.
In the aftermath of the battle, Lamech is reunited with his firstborn son, Noah, and introduces him to his brother, Seni. He also reconnects with Logan and forgives him for his unwitting part in Bete’s death. After this reunion, Logan returns to the Outside World of Men and is installed as Commander of the Destiny’s Tomorrow, while Noah accompanies him aboard the ship, learning the ways of the sea.
The story opens with the Prologue, taking place near the end of Theodicy (Book 6). And so the story continues.
