Noah’s Sons
This last part of the book offers a brief window into the childhood of Noah’s children. It is hard to know the order of the sons. In the lists found in both Genesis 5:32 and 10:1, the order is Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Later in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, the order is reversed. It gives Japeth’s descendants first, then Hamm’s, followed by Shem’s. Then, in Genesis 10:21, it says, “Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were born.” (NASB, emphasis mine). But the way the text describes Shem as the older brother of Japeth seemed to suggest, at least to me, that Japeth was the second child, making Hamm the youngest.
