Chapter VINoah as herald of righteousness
This chapter is designed to answer two specific points concerning Noah, son of Lamech. In 2 Peter 2:5, the text describes Noah as a preacher or herald of righteousness. So, it was important to demonstrate this aspect of him in the story. In my story, since his great-grandfather had the habit of taking “walkabouts” all around the world, it seemed justifiable that his descendant would, too. Also, you might remember that Lamech had a history of disappearing for extended periods in his youth. Since the “respectable” Sethites and the rest of the lines of Adam were already suspicious of Enoch’s and Lamech’s sanity, it would be natural for them to look for something off about Noah. Methuselah, though a good character in the narrative, has a little too much concern for being respectable in society. Thus, he has an internal conflict because while he understands and sympathizes with the aims of his father, son, and grandson, he feels they could accomplish their ends in more culturally appropriate ways.
Also, Noah is a man who will spend a great deal of time on an ark in the ocean (Genesis 6-9). From the text, he does not appear to have had any means to steer the ark, yet he must have known something about the sea. So, it seemed wise to ensure that Logan trained him in the ways of the sea.
