North Star and Multiverse
I tried to use this chapter to illustrate the a priori beliefs that seems to pervade many atheist scientists. Such brilliant men and women will devise every possible theory to avoid at all costs a conclusion that a Higher Power might exist. I placed Dr. Geiger in a world that would be vastly superior to our own, but with enough similarities to really make him wonder. When I did my research on how the night sky would look thousands of years ago, I learned that the North Star would be different. Otherwise, the constellations would be in pretty much the same shape as they are now. Of course, the ancients would not necessarily have the same names and such of the consultations, but pattern would remain the same.
Dr. Geiger is completely ignorant of the Bible and would not believe it if knew anything about it. Thus, he does not think there was ever a cataclysmic event like the Great Flood in the Earth’s past, which fundamentally changed the entire biosphere. His only conclusion, then, would be that he entered a parallel universe when he fell through the door in the Sacred Cave. Many science fictions movies and TV shows have played on this theme, making it a very common and easily accepted in Western societies. These days even atheist scientists have a hard time with the astronomically small chance their models give for life coming into existence as they believe it did. However, that problem almost disappears if you just believe there are an infinite number of universes and we happen to live the one that it DID occur. How convenient.
