12 Stones
The twelve stones mentioned in this section of the book are the same ones that Joshua commanded the Israelites to set up as a memorial. He wanted everyone to remember that God stopped the Jordan River from flowing when the Ark of the Covenant stood in the middle of the river and God’s people crossed into the Promised land. This is recorded in Joshua chapters 4 & 5. As you have probably noticed, the concept of “memory” and “remembering” is important throughout the whole Future Perfect series. Have you ever noticed how often we are told to remember throughout the Old and New Testament? When you read the scriptures, take notice of this. You might be surprised how often that concept comes up.
In the narrative, twelve stones are taken out of the river. Joshua tells the Israelites that “these stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” However, there is some indication in the text (Joshua 4:9) that Joshua also had 12 stones placed in the river at the place where the Ark of the Covenant stood. Either way, in the narrative I created the stones of this Old Testament story remained, even after the destruction of all timelines. They represent the fact that it is not we who guide our path, but God. Even great men like Enoch must allow God to do that.
